Chapter Eleven

“Seriously, Brooke?” Jannette looked up from the map, “That’s going to take days for us to walk. Couldn’t you find somewhere closer?”

“It’s not that far. Stop being dramatic, Jannette. I’m sure we’ll make it there before it gets dark.” Brooke folded the map and put it in her backpack. “Besides, there’s no way of knowing if all the roads will be passable between here and there.”

“Well, ya know we could just go someplace else! Anderson has other places we could bunk down, regroup and make a decision on what to do next.” Jannette began shoving the camping chairs into their bags.

“Leave those, they’re too heavy to carry. We’ll need to bring only essential supplies.” Brooke stared at her friend. This wasn’t like Jannette. She was a survivalist above all else. Her farm house was a fortress. She grew her own vegetables, had several fruit trees, not to mention the animals. The animals.

“Jannette…Your animals…”

She faced Brooke, wiping an arm across her face. Even though she’d erased all the tears, there was nothing she could do about her red eyes. “Yeah.” She wiped her nose with a stray napkin. “I’m pretty sure they’re dead by now. If not, they will be soon. With nobody there to feed and water them…” She dropped her arms and threw her head back.

“You don’t know that. Maybe one of your crazy neighbors took pity and checked on them…or at least stole them.” Brooke pulled her in for a hug.

“I’m telling you, Brooke…I know that woman let my rabbits out of their cages last spring. Stupid bitch thought she was setting them free. She didn’t consider the number of foxes, hawks and other vermin that live out there.”

Patting her back, Brooke chuckled, “I know. It was a mess. Remember I had to come out and help you clean up. Took us all day. Then we spent the night around a bonfire toasting to their short lives.”

“Brooke?”

“Yes, Stacy?” Brooke began gathering the few supplies left over from breakfast.

“The guys from the shops want to come with us.”

Walking toward the two men, if you could call them men, that were standing just outside of their temporary camp. Neither one looked old enough to shave. “Where are your families? Don’t you want to go find them?”

“Of course. But I don’t live in Anderson. My mom usually drops me off for work. Since she didn’t come last night…” The boy, who couldn’t have been over seventeen, suddenly found something on the ground very interesting.

“I don’t have any family. Grew up in the system, got kicked out last summer, right after I turned eighteen. They said the checks stopped, so they couldn’t afford to take care of me anymore. I got an apartment a few miles from here,” he looked toward downtown, “but I have a feeling it’s not there any longer.”

“Okay, sure. You guys can come with us. But you’re going to carry your own weight. You can start with grabbing some backpacks and filling them up with food from your shops.
